When CITY Saves, Kids Win: St. Louis CITY SC and Together Credit Union Celebrate the Saves for Savings Program
CITY SC Goalkeeper and Captain Roman Bürki joins Together Credit Union to celebrate the “Saves for Savings” program following a successful inaugural regular season
ST. LOUIS, MO – St. Louis CITY SC and Together Credit Union are celebrating the successful launch of their community-driven program, “Saves for Savings.” Led by CITY SC goalkeeper Roman Bürki, Together Credit Union opened a $300 savings account for a local student for every save CITY SC made during the 2023 regular season.
“The goal of the Saves for Savings program is to empower students with the knowledge they need to confidently and effectively fulfill their goals,” said Tom Kraus, Together Credit Union’s Chief Operating Officer. “For some, this means understanding how to budget for a car or college. For others, this means learning how to allocate their paycheck into needs, wants, and savings.”
St. Louis CITY SC goalkeepers Roman Burki and Ben Lundt made 127 saves (the second-most saves in the league), which resulted in $38,100 in total savings. Bürki was the first goalkeeper to record 100 saves in Major League Soccer this season. On April 22, Bürki recorded the most saves in a single match this season, blocking 12 shots against Colorado Rapids with a 92% save percentage.
“CITY SC’s inaugural season is inspiring in so many ways, and we are excited to create additional educational opportunities to connect with teens in impactful and relatable ways,“ added Kraus.
To be eligible for the Saves for Savings program, teens ages 13-18 completed a financial education program co-hosted by CITY SC and Together Credit Union. Recipients of the Earn & Learn saving account are from Gateway Region YMCA and Boys Hope Girls Hope of St. Louis.
“It’s amazing what can be accomplished when two like-minded organizations collaborate,” said St. Louis CITY SC’s President and General Manager Diego Gigliani. “As a club, we are committed to being more than a soccer team and ensuring we work to make St. Louis better for future generations. Our partnership with Together Credit Union and the ‘Saves for Savings’ program help ensure the next generation have the tools to achieve financial stability. We want to give a huge shoutout to our goalkeepers, one being the undisputed best goalkeeper in Major League Soccer, who have done a tremendous job racking up the saves this season.”
In addition to the Saves for Savings program, Together Credit Union and CITY SC have partnered to launch Soccer for Our CITY, a community initiative that allows eligible youth to participate in the YMCA’s soccer program at a reduced cost, and to promote Zogo, a free "gamified” financial literacy app that provides 700+ bite-sized, action-based lessons on various financial wellness topics.
